Arrived in Tangier Morocco on Tuesday 19 April after crossing the Straits of Gibraltar. Our first sight of Tangier wasn't what we expected - no camels, tents or desert - rather a lush green city. We were met by our national guide, Abdul, who spent lots of time trying to teach us some basic Arabic (not too sucessfully). The trip to Fez was interesting - lots of donkeys and mules pulling carts and narrow bumpy roads. Enjoyed a Moroccan feast in Fez - good food and great Moroccan Coca Cola (red wine). The next moring off to the Medina - WOW!!!!! 18,000 streets with no names and 250,000 inhabitants selling everything from fish and meat to jewellery and carpets. Spent hours wandering - luckly we had a guide otherwise we'd probably still be trying to find our way out!!
The next day on to Marrakesh where we had a quick look at the Djemma El Fna Square and then off for more Moroccan food and belly dancing. Headed into the Atlas Mountains the next morning to a local Berber village where they served us mint tea and home made bread and honey and we got to enjoy some beautiful scenery. Back the the Djemma El Fna square where we spent sveral hours wandering and watching the snake charmers and water sellers and bought some souvenirs. Had our first water pipe that evening with apple flavoured tobacco - different and very nice!
Then on to Casablanca and had a stop at Rick's Cafe (from the movie) . Wandered along the waterfront and then to the Casbah (open air market) where we wandered for a couple of hours and bought some more souvenirs.
The next morning headed back towards Tangier along the Atlantic coast with a stop in Rabat to see the sights.
Morocco was fabulous - lots to see and experience, great food and wonderful people. The people were probably the highlight - wanting to talk just to practice their English, friendly, tolerant and happy, happy happy! We were very sorry to say goodbye to Abdul who is a great character and full of charm and tall stories. The only thing left to say is 'waha habibi'.
